Mountain Safari "PH"
The Russell Safari "PH", while the ideal boot in the vast majority of African hunting venues, was changed slightly, ideally suiting it for tougher going on steep rocky hillsidesides, made a bit heavier... a bit tougher... with a more aggressive sole for mountainous conditions. True triple vamp construction, full wrap around molded sole, made from waterproof WeatherTuff leather with cushion collar. Equipped with sturdy heel counters and top lacing studs. Available with aggressive, long wearing Vibram Sierra soles or Vibram Air Bob soles. The resulting shoe is a bit heavier and a bit stiffer than the standard Safari "PH", but offers added support and traction for more demanding situations. |
Russell Moccasins almost cost me my marriage.
Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration but I have to say that the measuring process that I had to go through in order to obtain a hand made pair of Russell boots was strenuous to say the least and in no way should be undertaken by a spouse or other loved one. My suggestion would be to pay somebody you don’t know nor care about to measure your feet.
The problem lies with the number of measurements required and the fact that your feet have to be traced onto a sheet of paper. Also factor in that you can’t move while being measured and that you have to point out the exact spot of the ball of your feet and instep and you can see why the process leads to a lot of nagging, complaining, general bitching, and threats (and that’s just from the person GETTING measured). Further compounding this emotional jackhammer of pain and self esteem bashing is the time one must wait to have the boots made. Unlike all my other shoes that are made by foreign kids making a nickel a day and staring at pictures of a Nike Swoosh or Kathy Lee Gifford all day, Russell Moccasin boots are made in the USA by skilled craftspersons who take their time. It took Russell six weeks to make mine and that was a rush job!
Was all that pain and waiting worth it? Absolutely! To quote Barbara Streisand (and how many times do you see her quoted in a hunting magazine?) these boots “are like butta.” They are. My Mountain Safari PH Boots fit perfectly and offer excellent arch and ankle support. They are without a doubt the best pair of boots I have ever worn-- and as they were made to order, my boots didn’t require a “breaking in” period.
On a recent hunt for mouflon on the Texas-Mexico border where every step was on top of mesquite and cactus thorns my new Russells performed flawlessly. My feet were comfortable, sturdy, and thorn and callus free. I can not sing these boots praises enough. They are a great product.
