Bugs. Huge black flies and mosquitoes the size of alley cats. In fact there are so many bugs tearing around the camera during the moose hunt segment of North American Game IV that if it was filmed in HDTV I’d probably still be in the fetal position in the corner of my living room cradling two of Raid and screaming for the Orkin man. The segment is just that nasty. How Jack Brittingham could stand to hunt the entomologist’s dream of Alaska, let alone takes a 72 inch moose with a bow there, is beyond me. Watching the segment is uncomfortable enough, but hunting in that hive…Ha! I’d almost rather accompany Richie Bland who also takes a trophy moose on this video, but does so in the realitively bug free environment of British Columbia. But then again I don’t know that I could spend time in a hunting camp with a guy who wakes up saying things like, “Ahhhhh, it’s a beautiful morning. Right at freezing” as Richie does. Viewing these segments of Richie’s and Jack’s tolerance for, what I consider to be, uncomfortable surroundings in order to take trophy animals is just one of the reasons this video is so good. Other reasons would be excellent cinematography, sound, and the quality of game taken. In addition to moose, several elk, pronghorn, Dall sheep, and the new #1 Pope & Young grizzly are taken on camera. Each hunt segment takes viewers to an enthralling, albeit sometimes nasty, location beautifully filmed and documented. But again, the location and what it dishes out only add to the story of the hunt. Having never seen any of the dozens of videos from Jack Brittingham’s Wide World of Hunting Video series I must say that I was thoroughly impressed and can’t wait to watch the next one. I’d even consider hunting with Jack if we could agree on someplace warm (and free of pterodactyl-sized bugs).
