8 Feet of Gar

Texas safari Magazine 8 feet of Alligator gar bowfishing

On August 4, 2005 Keith Riehn and Robin Parks of Missouri came face to face with the realities of “Everything is bigger and better in Texas” while bowfishing the backwaters of Sam Rayburn Reservoir near Lufkin.

Having had tremendous success with their first bowfishing video Aim n’ Low Volume I, which explored the rich abundance of trophy fish afforded bowfishers in Texas, Riehn and Parks returned to the Lone Star State to gather footage for their next release, Aim n’ Low Volume II.  This time the two chose the twisting sloughs and backwaters of Sam Rayburn Reservoir.

For several days Riehn and Parks took numerous trophies including the new state record buffalo that pushed the scales at more than 60 pounds and several 30 pound longnose gar, one of which was over 60 inches in length.  But the real trophy came on the last day of the hunt on August 4th.

Having had enough of the unrelenting Texas sun, Riehn and Parks agreed to call it quits after completing one more pass through an area that had produced very little action.  Just as they were about to kill the trolling motor they both noticed a barrel-sized alligator gar just below the surface of the water.  Riehn and Parks fired simultaneously, each hitting the prehistoric leviathan dead center.  Immediately their spools screamed under the strain of the behemoths’ run.  After more than 20 minutes, one more arrow, and two sore backs pushed to the breaking point, the gar finally came to rest on the deck of the boat.
